At a time when watches were still slipped into waistcoat pockets, aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont faced an obvious problem: it was impossible to read the time in flight without letting go of the controls.
In 1904, he turned to his friend Louis Cartier and asked him for a solution. Cartier then designed a watch intended to be worn on the wrist, readable at a glance. Thus was born the Cartier Santos, one of the first modern wristwatches.
